The question is, how can we encourage progress in this up and coming field? To achieve further progress we have to offer a better and more in depth understanding of what Health/Positive psychology is and how it compares to the disease model found in traditional psychology. The more knowledgeable people are about this field, the more likely they are to pass on these ideas to others. This can only be done if psychologists make an effort to also publish their findings in the field.
It is important to know that this field has a very long past. Its theories can be traced all the way back to Aristotle and many other historical philosophers. Aristotle believed that, “ the philosopher who exercises his reason and cultivates it must be the most godlike and therefore the happiest” (Guha, Martin, and Carson, "Positive Psychology, Utilitarianism And The Pursuit Of Happiness."). This belief led him to spend most of his life chasing the elusive concept of happiness. However, happiness and its causes were impossible to measure, this left many doubting Aristotle’s hypothesis.
Those who share the beliefs of Aristotle agree that both theory and practice are very important in achieving the acceptance of this field. It is the philosophical foundation of the field that demands an experimental component, in turn this will help reinforce both the learning and understanding. This is crucial because we learn best when we can see the relevance of information. If this information has to do with bettering our own lives isn’t it worth exploring?
