It is very important to represent Positive Health Psychology, not as opposing prior research, but as a missing piece of prior research.
Today this lack of representation leaves holes in psychology, and in the research surrounding it. These holes are found in all sub fields of psychology. And, when we ignore the other half of the spectrum, subtracting the yin from the yang (subtracting the wellness model from the disease model), but we disregard these important milestones. Therefore, to ensure we are getting the most out of all psychological research, we must first incorporate the Positive Health Psychology into all the sub fields of psychology.
There are many ways this lack of representation can be corrected, most importantly is educating the public. It is crucial to correct this altered view and to make people realize that it is not just about being happy (wellness model). Happiness is only a small part of this science, an important part, but small nonetheless. This science is about finding the good in humans and how to harness those values to overcome weaknesses and struggles.
Positive psychology reminds us time and time again that happiness is not the negation of unhappiness. That in it self is the goal, to teach us to take care of ourselves, both mind and body. People must understand that happiness cannot be achieved over night, it is not that simple. However, it can be achieved and it doesn’t always have to created by medications, you can create it.
